The entire novel is structured around a crime and the reconstruction of Jericho after a violent earthquake. The novel within this novel, what was left by the Poet Porreirinho, is apparently an attempt to recount how an entire city, in the fury of a people's survival in the face of violent earthquakes, warnings from the Atlantic nature, and the genetic greed of those who control and demand everything, convinces itself of its virtue and perceives its historical continuity.
From the pages bequeathed by this disappeared author and those that his friend tries to put in order for a publication that never comes to fruition, because while reality-reality is apprehended only in disconnected and ahistorical fragments, its excellencies in the city know very well that fictional reality is the most complete – and therefore dangerous. In these multiple dialogues lies the dissection of the plots, obsessions, and collective memory of said community.
A foreign-Dutch ghost who arrived at those ports as a castaway and who would fall in love with the city and one of its many nuns - descends to earth to compare notes with the Poet Porreirinho, focusing on the past and the present. The rest is a feast of humor, sarcasm, and the most pithy phrases.
